I know there is no statutory limit to the number of ECT treatments that can be authorised under T4 or T6 with the usual being 12, but what about ECT under s62? Some are saying only 2 ECT treatments can be specified at a time, others saying 12 can be authorised as long as of course the RC can justify why ECT is immediately necessary to save life or to prevent a serious deterioration of the patients condition etc.
Legally there is no restriction to number if treatments prescribed under s62.
However it would need to be reviewed regularly to ensure the requirements for urgency are still met for each treatment along with checking capacity to consent hasn’t changed (should change to T2 ) . This is why most trusts have a policy which say you can only prescribe 2 treatments at a time and must do a new S62 certificate every two treatments.
